I got my HTC Desire back!

Where do I begin? Two days back (12th June), my HTC Desire got stolen on my way back from Rajshahi trip. The trip was fantastic, but the unfortunate event kind of left me in a bit upsetting mood. I had a difficult Sunday, and Monday wasn't getting any better either. Then the most surprising thing happenned. It was around 8pm, Sabit (my wife) and I were getting ready to go to a wedding. Somebody called on her phone. I answered and a series of events took place after that. I got my phone back this evening. Never imagined even in my wildest dreams. Thanks to Allah. Now I am cleaning up and installing custom ROM. Very happy today. Life is really full of surprises.

Spilling 1440 each day

1989682740

It doesn't always go as you plan. As a matter of fact it almost never goes as you plan. Something somewhere eventually pops up! And I have no idea why I am writing this, didn't plan it either. It's been a while since I last relaxed and really just listen to music or watch a movie without any distractions. It seems 1440 minutes in a day isn't enough to accommodate chill time. Then again when you measure how much of the day you spent doing what, you realize you wasted a lot of it.

Custom ROM for your Android

Before we begin:
This is based on my own experience and accumulated knowledge from others on the web. Mine is an HTC Desire and the machine I am using is a Mac. So, I will explain the steps from a Desire/Mac perspective :) By the way, some of the steps might take a while, just be patient throughout the process. And as a precaution, first save all your data on SD Card and phone somewhere else, and then proceed.

Step - 1: Root your Android
This is basically to give you root permissions to your device, which is a mandatory to continue next steps. The rooting procedure differs from phone to phone. The easiest method:
  1. Go to Unrevoked and download the appropriate application for your phone model. Currently they support HTC Evo 4G, Hero, Wildfire, Aria, Desire and Droid Incredible.
  2. On your Desire, go to Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB Debugging is turned on.
  3. Connect your phone using USB cable.
  4. Now run the downloaded Unrevoked app and follow whatever it tells you to do. Piece of cake!

Step - 2: Install ROM Manager

  1. Go to Android market, and search for ROM Manager
  2. Once found, install it. Next Clockwork.

Step - 3: Install Clockwork Recovery (or ClockworkMod or ClockworkMod Recovery)

  1. Make sure your phone is connected to Internet.
  2. Launch the installed ROM Manager on your phone.
  3. In the app, tap Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
  4. Specify or confirm phone model if prompted during the process, and follow any on-screen instructions. Wala!

Step - 4: Create EXT Partition with Gparted

  1. Get a Ubuntu ISO image and burn it on a CD.
  2. Boot your machine from the Ubuntu live CD.
  3. Connect your phone's SD card with a card reader.
  4. Launch Gparted from System > Administration > Gnome Partition Editor.
  5. Resize your SD card partition and leave/create a 1.5GB (max) EXT3 or EXT4 partition towards the end. The hard parts are done!

Step - 5: Do a Nandroid Backup
  1. Go to ROM Manager.
  2. Scroll downn and tap on Backup current ROM (or Nandroid or Backup and restore).
  3. That's your Nandroid backup! You may restore to this point anytime if something goes wrong!

Step - 6: Get a Custom ROM
  1. Download a custom ROM of your choice for Desire from XDA Developers.
  2. Store the downloaded custom ROM in a folder on your SD card. Almost there!

Step - 7: Install the Custom ROM
  1. Launch ROM Manager from your phone.
  2. Tap on Reboot into Recovery.
  3. After reboot, wipe the following:
    • Data/factory reset
    • Cache partition
    • Dalvik cache from Advanced option
  4. Once done, go to Install from Zip and choose your downloaded ROM from the folder. Done, finally!

There is no end of it:
You can repeat steps 5, 6, 7 for every new custom ROM you get hold of. Good luck with your new freedom!

Just a Finnish body ain't enough anymore

Being a long time Symbian fan and user, I waited for the disappointing N8 before my switch to Desire. Yes, N8 is a fine piece of hardware. But in the race of smartphones, Symbian has to come out of its sluggishness. And if that's a big uncertainty, adoption of smarter new like Windows Phone 7 seems to be the right move for Nokia. If N8 came with WP7, I would have taken it. But for now I am loving my shiny new Android.

bKash-BBL teams up with US firm

“bKash presents a compelling business plan which capitalises on a ripe economy to dramatically expand access to formal financial services, both as an extension of BRAC Bank and as a full-scale mobile phone-based payment switch," said Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali.

bKash Limited -- a joint venture company between BRAC Bank and Money in Motion LLC, USA, -- recently signed an agreement with ShoreBank International, an international consulting firm, to provide financial services through an extensive network of community-based agents and existing technologies, including mobile phones.

On November 16, ShoreBank announced that it has received a $10 million grant from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support this enterprise.

Kamal Quadir, chief executive officer of bKash, and Jesse Fripp, vice president of ShoreBank, inked the deal in Dhaka. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder and chairperson of Brac; Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali, chairman of Brac Bank and bKash, and Syed Mahbubur Rahman, managing director of BRAC Bank, were also present.
